Why are left-arm unorthodox bowlers referred to as "chinamen?"?

I don't know if I'm mistaken but in my understanding, left arm unorthodox spinners (left handed version of a leg spinner in other words) are also called chinamen bowlers. Why is that so? Where does the name come from?
