Could this be shingles?

I went to my Dr. because I was having pain under my right rib and burning pain and numbness near my bone. He told me that the burning and numbness could be shingles. I haven't broken out in any kind of rash/blisters. Can you get shingles without the blisters? What else could cause a burning sensation and numbness if its not shingles?
