1st Grade Teachers????

I would really LOVE to teach 1st grade. I have been looking at some 1st grade teacher websites. On the websites they have weekly cl newsletters. As I was reading them some of them said "next week the kids will be taking a yearly writing test or a yearly reading test." How are the kids able to take a state writing or reading test if they don't know how to read or write? How do you have them do activites that require to read or write if they don't know how to? I would LOVE to work with first graders but I have no idea how you can if they don't know how to read or write. How are you able to p out a test and have them do it on their own?
