What video format do you need to have to watch a video on your phone?

I have a AT&T phone that is a Samsung. I brought a memory card and try puting a video in there and watching it on my phone. but When I try to watch it, my phone said that the file isnt supported. So what kind of format does the video need to be in to watch it on your phone. I had my file as a Windows Media Player
